What Is NETFILE?
NETFILE is the Canada Revenue Agency's online system for electronically transmitting your completed personal income tax return directly to the CRA. It's not a piece of software itself — it's the transmission channel that CRA-certified tax software (or a tax preparer, like AppleTreeTax) uses to send your return once it's ready.
Most Canadians who file online never see the word "NETFILE" beyond a confirmation screen — the software or preparer handles the transmission for you and gives you a confirmation number once the CRA accepts the return.
📌 NETFILE vs. Filing Software
People often use "NETFILE" and "tax software" interchangeably, but they're different things. Tax software (or a preparer) prepares your return; NETFILE is simply the CRA's system that receives it. You can't "NETFILE" without a return already prepared in NETFILE-certified software.
Who Can Use NETFILE
Most individual filers are eligible, but the CRA excludes a few situations from NETFILE each year. You generally cannot use NETFILE if:
- You're filing a return for a year before 2022
- You went bankrupt during the tax year
- You're a non-resident of Canada for the full year
- You're filing on behalf of someone who died in 2026
- Your address is outside Canada
- You're filing an amended return in some cases
If you fall into one of these categories, your return typically needs to be paper-filed or handled by a professional who can determine the correct filing method — AppleTreeTax reviews this for every client before filing.
How NETFILE Filing Actually Works
- Gather your slips — T4s, T5s, RRSP contribution receipts, medical expenses, and any other tax documents for the year.
- Prepare your return — using CRA-certified software, or by having a tax preparer complete it for you.
- Review for accuracy — every credit and deduction you're eligible for should be reflected before submission.
- Transmit via NETFILE — the software or preparer sends the completed return to the CRA electronically.
- Get your confirmation number — the CRA issues this immediately as proof of successful submission.
2026 Filing Deadlines
| Filer Type | Deadline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Most individuals | April 30, 2026 | Balance owing due same date |
| Self-employed individuals | June 15, 2026 | Balance owing still due April 30 |
| NETFILE service opens | Late February 2026 | Exact date set annually by CRA |
⚠️ Common Mistake
Self-employed filers often assume their whole return is due June 15 — but any balance owing is still due April 30. Filing after April 30 with a balance owing means interest starts accruing immediately, even if your paperwork deadline is later.
NETFILE Software vs. Hiring a Preparer
You can absolutely file your own return through NETFILE-certified software. It's often the right call for a simple return — one T4, no dependents, no rental or self-employment income. Where it gets riskier is complexity: missed credits, incorrectly claimed deductions, or self-employment/rental income that needs proper T2125 or Schedule L reporting.
AppleTreeTax reviews every return before it's transmitted through NETFILE — the same electronic system, but with a trained preparer checking for credits and deductions software alone won't catch, and a Canada Revenue Agency authorized e-filer (Rep ID: G3XY7S) standing behind the filing.
